COMMISSIONS

Elissa in the process of painting

What's so great about a custom commissioned piece of art?

To the Client: A work that is completely unique and perfectly fits your space in size and color. More importantly, it is a quality heirloom that can be passed from generation to generation (with proper care).

To the Artist: It's so much more. When an interested buyer reaches out to an artist to commission a piece it is more that just an exchange of goods. It means you have a vested interest in their work, their aesthetic, and value their skill.

Investing in original art is just that: an investment that I, as the artist, do not take lightly. I want to ensure that not only do you receive a quality work of art but also art that you love, fits your space, and becomes a statement in your home, office, or wherever you have chosen to display.

FAQs

How do I start the process for a commission?

The first step in a commission is to email me at elissamariestudio@gmail.com. Important and helpful information to include in this email would be your budget, general colors you are considering, general size you are considering, and a photo of the space in which you are thinking of displaying the piece. It's helpful to know what the overall area looks like in terms of décor so that I can create something that seamlessly fits in your space (bonus points if you know what your paint colors are!) If you are unsure of colors or sizes you want, that's okay! I can help you decide those details. After I review your request, I will let you know if I am 1) taking on commissions at that time and 2) if we are a good fit. If so, I'll walk you through the next steps.

What does a commission cost?

Original art is definitely an investment. Below is a general estimate of my commission prices but these are subject to change to accommodate the current cost of materials, special requests, and any other additional details that may add to the turn around time. Please note that clients are not limited to these sizes!

  • 16x20 inches - $300
  • 18x24 inches - $375
  • 24x30 inches - $590
  • 24x36 inches - $700
  • 24x48 inches - $860
  • (2) 16x20 inches Diptych - $530
  • (2) 18x24 inches Diptych - $650

When is payment due?

Once I take you on as a client and we confirm your size and materials a 50% deposit is required for me to begin (and purchase your supplies). The remaining 50% is due when the painting is completed. The work will not be shipped until the piece is paid in full. An invoice will be sent for each portion. Shipping will be invoiced separately.

What sizes do you offer?

Any size square or rectangle! Frankly, the sky is the limit but that will up your shipping cost. Though I do prefer not to go smaller than approximately 16x20 inches for a commission.

What is your turn around time?

For commissions it very much depends on the size and amount of detail requested. Typically it ranges from about 4-8 weeks from the time I confirm I can take you on as a client and I receive your deposit to when I package and ship your piece (or it's ready for pick up). Shipping is not included in that timeframe.

What's the deal with shipping?

Shipping is an additional cost that will be invoiced separately from the cost of the art itself. This will not be determined until the piece is finished as even small changes in materials and size can greatly influence the cost of shipping. Please keep in mind that safely shipping a high priced work of art can be very expensive and the cost should be considered in your budget. One way to save money on shipping is opting to have your finished piece removed from the frame and rolled vs. shipped on the frame. You can then have a local framer re-stretch the art back onto the frame which will be shipped rolled inside the canvas. *Please note that shipping is currently limited to the continental United States.*

I am local to Maryland, can I pick it up in person to avoid shipping costs?

Yes! We can coordinate this once your painting is finished.

What materials do you work with?

Most of my art is created on raw canvas, meaning the natural texture and color of the canvas is visible in the art (rather than a white background). I use a variety of materials from acrylic paint, chalk/soft pastel, loose pigments, charcoal, oil pastel, and oil sticks to create my paintings. Each painting is finished with several layers of UV varnish to protect it from dust and fading.

Will I see a sketch of your idea before you get started?

I will make sure that my clients approve the size, colors and any other general details that may be important and unique to your piece before beginning. Since my style is, quite literally, very fluid, I am unable to provide a sketch prior that would accurately show the finished painting.

Do you provide framing?

At this time, no. Though it is something I hope to offer my clients in the future. For now, I paint my pieces so they are beautiful from all angles, including that tiny little portion on the sides. I also attach simple wire hardware so it's ready for hanging as soon as you bring it into your space. If you do opt to have it framed, I highly suggest using a simple "float" style frame.

Can I return my painting or receive a refund?

Due to the custom nature of a commission refunds and returns are not an option. Both the initial deposit and final deposit are non-refundable. Thank you for understanding.
